Things to do in Dumaguete
A small town it might be, there is more that meets the eye for this promising Eden. At a glance, it gives you an impression of a quite and laid-back environment. However, there are a lot of exciting things you can do and experience just by visiting this stunning city. Experience the life together with "gentle people" and immerse yourself in-crowd, the in-places and the in-food. Drown yourself with all the pleasures of what you call "life" at its solace. Here are my top things to do:
Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner
One of the most remarkable things about the city is its steadily increasing number of restaurants and food chains. Dumagueteños appreciate good food. Since a large percentage of its population comprises of students, not mentioning those who are none locals, the price is a very big factor for every meal. Taking this into consideration, the prices are really low and affordable WITHOUT compromising quality. And because people in Dumaguete are more laid back and enjoy the foods generally more than in places where stress is a daily routine, the competition for these dotting restaurants is never an issue. Without any argument, food goes at the top of the list. See Foods - what and where for more.
Go to school
Although you can take this literally, you do not have to enroll yourself to a particular school to do this feat. Dumaguete is a well known University town and thus going to school falls on the top 5 things to do. Every year, thousands of guests, visitors and tourists come and see what the schools of Dumaguete has to offer. With the high literacy standards and efficient education curriculum, students are attracted to spend their college life in this wonderful city. Moreover, an increasing trend of foreign students come in yearly just to learn English at Silliman and other schools.
Experience outdoors
Given the milieu and ambiance of the city, feeling more energetic is a common experience. It is the perfect timing for you to enjoy nature and harness the potential energies of nature at your best condition. If you are in for some wild adventures, then the 30-meter repelling of Valencia's waterfalls is something you should not miss. Outdoor recreational trails are for you? Then mountain biking to the cool mountain village of Valencia would interest you. Finally, enjoy a blast of free-wheeling down the mountain in you way back to the city. Prefer the peaceful and quiet environment while exploring nature? Caving adventures smiles at you back. Marvel at the awesome stalactites and stalagmites, rivers and underground waterfalls that these caves can offer. Lastly, if you are wanting some golden tans on you, the beaches of Negros has everything to offer - from dolphin and whale watching to deep diving. Explore Apo Island, one of the world's best diving spots, and experience 650 different species of fish and 400 species of corals right before you eyes. Indeed, Dumaguete outdoors earn a rightful place on the list.
Stand by and Nightlife
As a laid back town, the Visayan term "stambay" which mean to stand by or to hang around best suits this place more than anywhere else in the Philippines. You can simply hang around at the boulevard and enjoy its picturesque view, or hang out with friends at Payag sa Likod or chill while listen to bands playing at hayahay, or do some drinkings while sound tripping with friends at Garahe. If listening and watching the bands does not describe you much, you might as well be the ones to sing your heart out with the different KTV bars at the New Boulevard which gives you an overview of the Rizal Boulevard at night, Labeled which offers fully air conditioned rooms and majestic quality of sounds or the refreshing sea breeze of San Moritz. On the other hand if you feel like breaking some beats, local clubs such as Sizzlers, Zanzibar, Barrocks, Why Not and El Camino would surely dig out your hidden dance moves.
